...of things unknown but longed for still...

I know why the caged bird sings

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wing in the orange suns rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

**Tell me what this poem says to you, if anything. Tomorrow (or as soon as I have time), I'll tell you why I posted it on my blog this week.**

Evidently your assignment is too hard Prof! I feel like I'm in high school all over again. I'm too literal for this interpretative stuff. Amazing Page passed me. But if I would venture to guess, it says that if you can't do the things that you are called to do, do the things that you can to fulfill that desire.

And don't buy a bird to put in a cage.

Okay, I thought about this the last few days and here is what I got from the poem:

Everyone feels like the caged bird in this poem at some point in their lives. Like they are meant to be FREE and destined for better, but something keeps them confined or held captive. They look on with envy to the people around them who appear to have it all. They cry out in words and actions hoping that someone will notice them and help set them free.

We're all caged birds until we accept Christ and then HE sets us free and gives us the freedom to glorify and praise Him everyday in all that we do. He gives us purpose and treasures beyone measure.

I need to remind myself of this on days when I feel myself creeping back towards that cage...I AM FREE. Christ set me free when I was 16 and now my purpose is to praise, sing and give glory to Him!
